It sounds like the "penny might have dropped?" Ask any questions if stuff doesn't make sense. SD2 lets you work in mono channels or stereo pairs, but I was raised on the Tascam Portastudio, so pan-routing is no problem to me you don't need a stereo send for SD2 mono mixer channels (unless you pan them differently for mics sharing channels out), so send it on a mono out, or as I've done here, pan to one side of a stereo out. It doesn't matter with the basic Avatar kit, but it will help you make the most of the 32 outs if you get to massively extended custom x-drum splattered kits You might want to look at the way I've mixed mono and stereo channels coming from SD2 in the screen-shots, I hope I haven't reduced them too much. I actually forget how to do it the automatic way I learned to use REAPER Track channels and sends for sidechaining and other routing stuff early on after it was introduced, so it stuck and it's second-nature to me now. I've been using REAPER since about 2007 and I'm still learning. Heh, been there! I understand -take regular breaks and reaquaint yourself with your family occasionally I'm trying to learn Reaper and SD at the same time while trying to create some great drum kits and record drum tracks for an album. Thank you! That is very helpful and generous. Note that if you already have the instrument track defined with all the tracks, you can simply do that last step to get all the routing done.
At this point all you have to do is go into SD2's mixer and right click over the "Out 1/2" popup and scroll down and choose "Multichannel" and SD2 will assign its default multichannel routing in the SD2 mixer.
If later you decide you would rather have each kit piece go out to a separate track channel so that you can EQ and Compress with your favorite plugins, right click on the SD2 name in the FX box for your track and choose "Build multichannel routing for output of selected FX" and reaper will automatically build all the track channels and assign the outputs. This isn't the most flexible way but it will do the job. With this single track approach you will have to use the mixer of SD2 to adjust EQ and compression for each piece of the kit.
Just create a new track and drag and drop SD2 from the FX browser onto it. If you want one track in which all of SD2 plays out of a single stereo channel then you don't really have to add a virtual instrument track.
